“Connection to the Server Was Interrupted” – Troubleshooting Guide

If you’re seeing the error “Connection to the server was interrupted” in Outlook or Outlook Express, it can stem from several common issues. Follow the steps below to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.

🔧 1. Verify Email Configuration

Ensure your email settings in Outlook/Outlook Express match the following:

  • POP3 Server: mail.yoursite.com
  • SMTP Server: mail.yoursite.com
  • Username: user@yoursite.com
  • Password: Your_Password

🌐 2. ISP Blocking Port 25

Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) block Port 25 to reduce spam. If you’re unable to send email, try changing the outgoing SMTP port:

  • Try Port 26 instead of 25.
  • Alternatively, use Webmail.

🛡️ 3. Disable Conflicting Software Temporarily

Certain firewalls and antivirus software may interfere with Outlook’s connectivity. Temporarily disable these during testing:

  • Norton (Symantec)
  • McAfee
  • Cisco Security Software

⚠️ Note: Re-enable your security software after testing.

⚙️ 4. Adjust Outlook Timeout Settings

  1. Open Outlook
  2. Go to Tools > E-mail Accounts
  3. Select View or change existing email accounts
  4. Choose your account and click Change
  5. Click More Settings > Advanced
  6. Increase the Server Timeout gradually
